Cycling is the most beautiful sport in the world. From above, the kaleidoscopic peloton expands and contracts akin to a liquid form as the cyclists respond to adjustments in speed. It flows around sweeping curves and moves through the narrow streets of ancient European villages, each rider a perfectly-tuned biological machine built for speed.
Each race also has its own personality. Some courses are known for their brutality and some known for their grandeur. The spring '“classics” are often long, cold, muddy affairs. Other races such as the three grand tours have the feel of a rolling showcase of the sport, parading from town to town with the sun almost always on the riders’ backs.
Regardless of which race and no matter the parcours (the course), the most exciting way to win a race is when one rider, either in a moment of desperation or through making a calculated risk, launches an attack off the front and rides away to a solo win. Going off the front takes strength, power, courage, and grit, and is always the most exciting and stylish part of the sport.
That’s what Off the Front is about — exploring the most exciting parts of life. History, style, sport, biography, music, books; anything that makes life worth living is fair play for discussion here. So let’s see where the conversation takes us, shall we?
